Bauhaus-inspired rug

About six months ago I had posted something about the Bauhaus exhibit at MoMA that was going on over the winter, and how I was inspired to make a rug modeled after a particular wall hanging by Anni Albers. This is the tapestry in question:

Six months later, I'm happy to report that I've finally finished the rug.

Not quite as many different shades involved here as in the original, but I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

Now for a closer look--don't mind all the wrinkles. I need to get a rug pad to keep it from moving around every time I step on it. If you're thinking you might want to invest some time into doing something similar, I did it by essentially knitting eight different scarves using seed stitch, and then sewing the scarves together. The cotton yarn wasn't too expensive either. Though I wasn't keeping track of how many skeins I ended up buying, the project probably cost me about $50.

Finally finished my sweater

Quite awhile ago, I mentioned that I was starting to knit a new sweater. Now, six months later, it's finally finished.

Actually, I was done with the knitting part several months ago but for some reason procrastinated on buying and sewing on the buttons. I even wore it a few times without buttons. But now that I've finally added them, I feel it's really and truly finished.

I'm pretty pleased with it. Right now I'm in the thick of my Albers-inspired rug but once that's done I've already got a new sweater idea in mind. For next winter, of course.

New knitting project

I haven't picked up a pair of knitting needles since I finished my purse in late May and I decided it was high time I start up a new project.

I found this vintage pattern for a cardigan, which looks to be an interesting enough design without the pattern being too complicated. (Sometimes I find that vintage patterns are hard to decipher.)

I already had some olive green yarn that I'd bought for a project that I've since decided not to make. If I time it right, I should have a new sweater just in time for the weather to get cooler.

Knitted purse with scribble pattern

I'm happy to report that the knitted purse I've been working on for the past few months is finally done.

While the pattern was a little bit tedious to follow at times, and certainly took a lot longer than usual due to all that counting, it wasn't as difficult as I had imagined it might be.


I actually finished knitting it a few weeks ago, and have been waiting for the wooden handles to arrive from the other side of the world (not to mention the fact that I was on vacation for over a week) so I finally sewed the lining and put it all together this past weekend.

Knitting progress

Right now I'm about halfway through a knitted purse I've been working on.


I wanted to make something with a pattern that looked like scribbles, so I found an image online and uploaded it to Knitpro, a site that allows you to turn a jpeg into a knitting pattern. It's been a pretty slow and tedious process that involves a lot of counting, but it's coming out pretty well and I'm happy to report that there hasn't been that much cursing and restarting. I was initially planning on felting it but I like the look of the individual stitches so I think I'll just make a fabric lining when it's all done.

For the handles I'm thinking of getting these great handmade wooden ones from Little Odd Forest.

I'm quite looking forward to this project being done because the handles on the purse I've been using on a daily basis are held together by black electrical tape. I had hoped it wouldn't be noticeable but I think it is.

The blanket is done!

After several months, the blanket is finally finished. And it's still kind of cold out, so it will be actually be used once or twice this season. Now I can finally move onto a new knitting project. (Stay tuned for that.)

Blanket progress

I started knitting a new blanket in January and have been taking pictures of its progress here and there.


Here it is in its early stages. Just a little baby blanket.


It's maybe a few weeks old here.


A closeup of the stitches. They're a little different on the other side, which doesn't bother me, as I like both patterns.


And here it is at the present moment. (It strangely reminds me of Cousin It, just hanging there like that.) I'm so close, but not quite done yet. I'm pretty sure that it will be ready just in time for the weather to start getting warmer.

Craft lunch

Last month one of my co-workers organized an informal monthly lunchtime crafting session, wherein a few of us bring in what we're working on, chat, and knit, embroider, sew sock animals, and so on. (So far that's what has been brought to the table--I'm interested to see if anyone shows up with any unusual projects, although I suppose it would have to be something that could be transported on a subway.) Today was our second craft lunch, and while it was a busy day, it was nice to pull myself away and de-stress for a little while.
